Biography[]

Sometime before the events of the movie, Johnny discovered Denny as a minor and wanted to adopt him, becoming a father figure to Denny. When Denny turned eighteen, Johnny found him an apartment in the same building as Johnny and Lisa and began paying for it, as well as his college tuition.

Denny is dating a girl named Elizabeth and when he graduates from college and gets a good job he wants to marry her and have kids with her.

At the beginning of the movie, Denny enters Johnny and Lisa's apartment and gushes over Lisa's new sexy red dress that Johnny bought for her. Denny asks how much it cost and Lisa scolds him. Johnny then announces that he is going to go upstairs to take a nap and Denny asks if he can go upstairs too. Johnny laughs and Lisa announces that she will join Johnny, trying to hint to Denny that the two are going to have sex and that Denny should leave. Denny then eats an apple and walks upstairs anyway, joining Johnny and Lisa as they have a pillow fight. Johnny asks Denny if he has something else to do and Denny says "I just like to watch you guys." Lisa finds this cute but Johnny tells Denny that "two’s great but three’s a crowd." Denny finally gets the hint to leave them alone ("That's the idea!") and he leaves to do homework, sparing himself from witnessing Johnny having sex with Lisa's belly button.

Presumably the next day, Denny visits Johnny and Lisa again only to find that Johnny is not home (he went to the flower shop). Denny asks if he can kiss Lisa and leaves upon being called a brat. The next scene is Johnny showing up at the house, possibly implying that Denny left as he arrived.

Denny later visits the two once again. Again, Johnny is not home and in his place is Lisa's mother Claudette, who has not met Denny before. Lisa introduces the two and Claudette rudely asks "How many people come in and out of this apartment every day?" and says that "This is worse than Grand Central Station!" Denny feels intimidated by Claudette's presence and says that he just needs to borrow some sugar, a cup of flour and half a stick of butter. Claudette asks Denny "Doesn’t your home have a kitchen?", prompting Denny to announce that he will just come back later. After Denny has left, Claudette asks Lisa what Denny does and Lisa reveals his aforementioned backstory.

Denny is next seen dribbling a basketball on the rooftop. Prolific gangster Chris-R approaches him. Denny says that he has been looking for him and Chris-R asks if Denny has his money. Denny tells Chris-R that he will have the money in five minutes, but Chris-R doesn't have five fucking minutes and pulls out a gun aimed at Denny's head. Chris-R begins repeatedly yelling "WHERE'S MY FUCKING MONEY, DENNY?!", though Denny keeps insisting that he does not have it. Johnny and his best friend Mark arrive in the nick of time to save Denny and take Chris-R to the police. Claudette and Lisa are also in this scene apparently and they begin ganging up on Denny. At first Denny tries to dismiss their worries by claiming that he just owes Chris-R money, but eventually admits that he bought some drugs from him but things got mixed up and he didn't mean for this to happen. Denny refuses to say how much money he owes or what drugs he bought, but claims he doesn't have the drugs anymore. Denny screams for the two to stop ganging up on him, but Claudette says that it's about time someone ganged up on him. Claudette threatens to call the police on Denny, but Mark returns to intervene and walks away with her. Johnny also returns and Denny apologizes to him. The three leave the rooftop too and this scene is never brought up again throughout the entire rest of the movie.

Sometime later, Denny confides to Johnny that he is attracted to Lisa. Johnny says not to worry about that because "If a lot of people love each other, the world would be a better place to live." Johnny asks about Elizabeth and suggests he focus on pursuing her instead.

Denny can be seen later hanging around Johnny and Mark's friend group, being present when Mark pushes Mike into a trashcan and when Johnny, Mark and Peter are playing football in tuxes. He then attends Johnny's birthday party and is also among the first to discover Johnny's corpse after he commits suicide.

Behind the Scenes[]

In the original script for The Room, when the movie was going to be a play, Denny's role is filled out by a character named Billy. The script refers to Billy as "LISA'S OBNOXIOUS YOUNGER BROTHER, WHO IS A HOMOSEXUAL".[1] Instead of Denny's crush on Lisa, Billy had a crush on Johnny. The stage directions also explicitly mention that Billy is 18, unlike Denny whose age is never explicitly revealed.

Trivia[]

  • Denny displays some attributes of autism and is typically heavily reliant on others.
  • Denny has the last spoken line in the movie: "Why, Johnny? Why? Johnny, why? Why?"
  • Despite Denny being the youngest character in the movie, Philip Haldiman was the oldest actor out of the main cast besides Tommy Wiseau and Carolyn Minnott.
